Maha Kumbh 2025, the biggest spiritual congregation in the world, is currently being held in Prayagraj. With a crowd of more than 400 million devotees, Indian Railways had led the process of managing transportation for all these millions of pilgrims. For anticipating such a massive inflow, huge investment has been made by the government in improving railway infrastructure so that it provides safe and smooth travel to all.

The, Maha kumbh Mela which began on January 13 in Prayagraj, is set to be one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world. Held every 144 years, the event has drawn over 400 million devotees. When this year’s gathering started from January 13, the Indian Railways had to increase its services and infrastructure meeting the demands of this pilgrim movement. Infrastructure Investment: Rs 5,000 Crore for the Deluge

All the major junctions- Prayagraj Junction, Naini, and Subedarganj have been upgraded as major railway stations in the city. The improvement includes:

48 upgraded platforms for increasing footfalls

21 FoBs for easy movement from one platform to another

554 ticketing counters of which 151 are mobile UTS counters for easy ticketing

21 road over bridges and road under bridges to bridge roads and rails

Apart from that, there is a 12-language announcement system implemented here so that the pilgrims could communicate their mother tongue so that they may travel without any hitch at all.

Tamings the tides:13,100 trains and special services

Indian Railways has planned an operation of 13,100 trains to cater to this huge population of devotees. Of which, 10,000 are regular trains and 3,100 special trains have been supplemented to that number. This is 4.5 times more than the last Kumbh Mela. Special trains are plying from main cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Bihar, and Jharkhand directly connecting them to Prayagraj.

In addition, 560 ring rail services are running on the following important routes:

Prayagraj-Ayodhya-Varanasi-Prayagraj

Prayagraj-Sangam Prayag-Jaunpur-Prayag-Prayagraj

Govindpuri-Prayagraj-Chitrakoot-Govindpuri

Jhansi-Govindpuri-Prayagraj-Manikpur-Chitrakoot-Jhansi

All these special trains ensure smooth and on-time travel for crores of devotees.

Infrastructure Uplift to Counter Balance Passenger Load Flow

Indian Railways has undertaken several infrastructure upgradation works to counter balance the added passenger load:

Advanced surveillance systems with 1,186 CCTV cameras at key stations ensure safety and crowd management.

Medical assistance is available 24/7 at major stations, and every health emergency is addressed on the spur of the moment.

A facilitation booklet in 22 languages has been given to the pilgrims for hassle-free movement on the large railway network during Kumbh.

Real-time Monitoring and Emergency Services

In addition, the security and sound health of millions who are going to witness the event, infrastructures, and real-time monitoring systems have been opened. The Indian Railways have also initiated the emergency medical camps for the medial attention to be provided to needy pilgrims. Stations in Prayagraj were technologically sound and service-sensitive places to meet the high rush of vehicular movement.

Railway Minister’s commitment to safe and efficient travel

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a press conference that the government is also emphasizing the safety of passengers and their comfort. He said that through new installations and upgradations, more than 1 crore people can be evacuated in a day. That is almost three times the evacuations at Kumbhs before, which was 40 lakh. Holding areas have also been made for the pilgrims before they are allowed onto the railway platforms.
