Sahakarnagar Metro station will soon be established on the much-awaited Swargate-Katraj route in Pune. This would change the transport infrastructure in the city with the new metro proposed at Sahakarnagar-Bibvewadi on the underground Swargate-Katraj metro route. Led by Minister of State (MoS) for Urban Development and Transport Madhuri Misal, this step is being undertaken to facilitate easier travel in these newly developing areas.
The Proposal for Sahakarnagar Metro Station
On 20th January, 2025, Madhuri Misal met Maha Metro officials. She discussed proceeding with the metro projects and studied the work for the Swargate-Katraj Metro line. While meeting them, she proposed building a new station at Sahakarnagar in order to help the local people of Sahakarnagar and Bibvewadi. It is the second additional station which has been suggested for this particular route. First, she proposed another station in Balajinagar.
The Swargate-Katraj Metro line is an essential part of the expanding Metro in Pune; with these stations included, the route would be easier to access by a larger population of commuters coming from Sahakarnagar and other nearby regions.
Swargate-Katraj Metro Route
Swargate-Katraj underground Metro route is one of the efforts that the city of Pune is making to modernize its public transportation system. This 5.5-km stretch will be mainly underground; hence it will not come in the way of the city’s infrastructure. The DPR for this route included, originally, three stations: Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj.
However, this would make it five stations along this stretch and a much better prospect for those residing in these localities, given that the Metro is now reachable. This will consequently form part of an integrated strategy toward enhanced mobility within the city with reduced traffic congestion in Pune.
Feasibility Study on Subsequent Stations
After the suggestion is made by the MoS, Maha Metro will initiate feasibility studies to be performed on its prospects of attaching those extra Sahakarnagar and Balajinagar stations into that Swargate-Katraj route without going against their original construction timelines, budgets, and regional infrastructures.
The actual construction work for the tunnel connecting Swargate to Katraj would start after finalizing feasibility studies, and state as well as the central governments sought clearances. The whole procedure for contractor selection would soon be finalised, and work for this sensitive period would be commencing within the next two months.
More connectivity by Metro and bus
In fact, it would be making Metro integrate into bus services. For instance, for the seamless connection of commuters from the Swargate Metro to the MSRTC terminus, Metro expansion in Pune would directly lead that way. Thereby, in an easy, seamless manner connecting commuters between service of Metro to that of the buses.
Similarly, the Shivajinagar Metro would connect directly with the MSRTC bus terminus located at Shivajinagar. The collaboration is done because of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between MSRTC and Maha Metro so that the transport services shall harmoniously work for an efficient smooth transit system in the hands of the citizens of Pune.
Upcoming Metro Projects in Pune
In addition to Swargate-Katraj route, several other Metro projects are on the active agenda of Pune. MoS Misal emphasized that two metro line proposals—the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi-Wagholi Metro corridors-have already been forwarded for Union Cabinet approval. Further, the proposals will extend Pune’s Metro network to other places in the city, ensuring easier connectivity and easy movement for people.
Conclusion
Soon, the Metro system in Pune will expand with the promising addition of Sahakarnagar station under the proposed Swargate-Katraj underground route, thereby being a befitting stride towards the efficient transport and mobility of people in urban areas. With additional stations and joint approach with bus services, Pune is indeed moving forward to becoming an upgraded, holistic city with improved public transport. All the Metros under construction claim to make every journey shorter in time, efficient, and kinder to nature.
