The city of Bhagalpur, which is in Bihar, has a plan to shift most of its transportation. With the help of RITES, two metro rail routes have been proposed, thus increasing the eco-friendly method to travel. These plans entail detailed studies and clear-cut strategies to improve public transport in the city. All this is aimed at making the journey easier, decreasing jams, and improving the quality of air for all individuals.

Outline of Proposed Metro Rail Corridors

RITES devised two proposed metro rail corridors in Bhagalpur. The network is planned to be implemented in two phases, and both phases will cater to the east-west and north-south areas of the city. All the work design of the two corridors aims at providing a sustainable travel network to the people of Bhagalpur.

The first proposed line

The first proposed metro line will be 17 kilometers long with 12 stations. It will be from Saidpur to Bhagalpur Railway Station, and cover all the significant places between them, such as Sabour, Bhagalpur College of Engineering, Zero Mile, Tilka Manjhi, and Bikhanpur.

It would serve 20 hectares of new metro depot that would be built in Saidpur. The main idea behind this is the large majority of people residing in Bhagalpur in terms of connectivity, as their transit time across these two vital nodes would reduce.

The second proposed line

The second proposed line will be 7 kilometres and connects Railway Station with Vastu Vihar Colony commonly called Pista Mod. In this corridor several localities will be passed, for which mentioned below:

Mojahipur
Maheshpur
Bhairopur

A depot will be on a 12-hectare area at Vastu Vihar. This route will provide direct access to residential areas besides enhancing the daily commute to residents in the northern and southern parts of the city.

Other Route Proposals

RITES is also considering some more routes apart from the two main corridors to further expand the metro network. The routes are:
Chanpanagar, Purani Sarai, Noorpur, Naubatpur, and Choudharydih to Kataria River
Alternate route through the city bypass, Kohra, Shitala Asthan Chowk, and Mirjanhat

Detailed reports from RITES will prepare a Comprehensive Mobility Plan along with Alternative Analysis Reports of all these additional routes. Thus, the metro would expand its network over other parts of Bhagalpur.

Advantages of the Metro Rail Project

The proposed metro rail project in Bhagalpur will benefit the city in numerous ways:

  1. Less Traffic Jam: Metro Rail shall give a competitive alternative transport, thereby lessening the number of automobiles running on the road and providing some relief from traffic jams.
  2. The people passing through this city will be able to reach destinations more speedily and reliably and at cheaper costs as compared to the days before.
  3. Lower Pollution Level: The metro that is to be run through electric trains will also help in contributing to lower levels of pollution, therefore fresher air in Bhagalpur.
  4. Reduced Road Accidents: The fewer number of traffic volumes, fewer road accidents will happen and hence the safer mobility of the city.
  5. Higher Real Estate Growth: Once the principal places have metro stations then, property values will certainly shoot up and more real estate development will be encouraged.

Project Timeline and Stakeholder Involvement

The Bhagalpur metro project has endeared itself to the local administrators. District Magistrate (DM) Nawal Kishor Choudhary has always been a strong votary and has spoken of Bhagalpur’s transport sector going to be revolutionized. Today, RITES officials and BMC representatives, among others, met to take an overview of the metro proposals placed on the table- one of which was even a PowerPoint presentation of all that has been done on the ground so far.
