Cochin Shipyard Limited-the shining name of Indian shipbuilding-stands to be one of the highest class shipbuilding yard where only quality vessels are manufactured. Its subsidiary, Udupi-Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), has launched a set of environment-friendly general cargo vessels to Wilson ASA, Europe’s leading short sea fleet operator. CSL, following its commitment to global environmental standards, will certainly continue in perfect alignment with “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make-in-India” initiatives by the Indian government.

Strategic Partnership of Cochin Shipyard with Wilson ASA

The first of six diesel-electric vessels was launched by the Minister Counsellor at the Royal Norwegian Embassy, Martine Aamdal Bottheim, along with Wilson ASA’s CFO, Einar Tornes, and CSL’s Chairman and MD, Madhu S Nair. These vessels are built to carry general cargo in the coastal waters of Europe, thereby reducing the environmental footprint. These are the ships that have been built taking into consideration increased demands for greener marine solutions. With 89.43 metres in length, breadth of 13.2 meters, and draft of 4.2 meters.

This project highlights CSL’s intent towards building India’s maritime capabilities as well as its global competitiveness. This shipyard has high quality and sustainability standards, thus being an ideal partner to the international clients like Wilson ASA.

Environmental Sustainability and Design Innovation

The ships that would be designed for Wilson ASA are diesel-electric propulsion-equipped ships. These would make the ships much more environmentally friendly. The ships were designed with the view of being energy efficient, thus perfect for the transport of cargo on short-sea eco-friendly cargo transportation within Europe. Designed by Conoship International from the Netherlands, the vessels combine the latest technologies and sustainable practices.

These vessels hence give an example of how CSL has been able to produce efficient, environmentally sound vessels for a greener shipping industry. With green technology, it not only meets the international emission standards but also makes the identity as a manufacturer of high-performance, eco-friendly vessels.

CSL’s Commitment to “Make-in-India” and Global Expansion

The project contributes to CSL’s efforts towards an economically self-reliant and competitive economy, the first vessel being a testimony of strong commitment the company has placed under “Atmanirbhar Bharat” that also underpins “Make-in-India” and “Make for the World” from the Government of India. CSL managed to achieve international standardization and was delivering top-of-the-line vessels for worldwide operations, which marked the growth in the India footprint for shipbuilding around the world.

These include the international success of CSL Shipyard’s ventures with Wilson ASA and reflect the confidence clients have in CSL’s capabilities. The European expansion is thus proof of the company’s competitiveness and the ability to fill the requirements of global customers.

Repeat Orders and Future Prospects

Launching the first vessel now also sets up a potential for Wilson ASA’s future orders. The company has already placed follow-on order for eight additional vessels that are scheduled for delivery in two lots-one in June and the other in September. In total, thus, there will be 14 vessels on order, of which many are already underway at different stages of building.

The repeat orders further strengthen the position of CSL as an efficient and reliable ally in the global shipbuilding business. UCSL’s order book stands at more than Rs 1500 crore and keeps on increasing with the hike in demand for high-quality vessels and its reputation, which is one of the best.

Udupi-Cochin Shipyard’s Growth and Success

Udupi-Cochin Shipyard, which Cochin Shipyard acquired in 2020 through the NCLT process, has undergone a transformation. The yard has turned into a profitable one within three years of operations and has won a few high-performance vessel contracts. UCSL has delivered a few specialized vessels, such as Bollard Pull tugs, which add further strength to its international maritime market.

Conclusion

Cochin Shipyard Limited and its subsidiary, Udupi-Cochin Shipyard, are gaining quite a momentum in the international shipbuilding scenario. Focus on building eco-friendly, high-performance vessels for international clients like Wilson ASA indicates India’s growing shipbuilding capabilities. Its order book is expanding while it is committed to the sustainable practices. CSL stands well poised for continued success in the international market.

By focusing on quality, sustainability, and innovation, CSL is creating new benchmarks for the future of global shipbuilding and supporting the vision of a self-reliant India.
