The Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious congregation, will return to Prayagraj in 2025. Indian Railways is undertaking major infrastructure works in the region to accommodate crores of devotees as the rail network is upgrading its elevated railway tracks, RUBs, and ROBs. It will be used to reduce the traffic congestion and ensure smooth transport during the event, from January 13 to February 26, 2025.

Key Infrastructure Projects for Maha Kumbh 2025

The railway infrastructure of Prayagraj is being overhauled in association with Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, an initiative taken by Indian Railways. The key features include raising railway tracks and getting rid of level crossings within the city and in its close environs. That would significantly minimize the traffic hitches and save time greatly in travel during the event of Maha Kumbh, when millions arrive at the city.

RUBs and ROBs at almost every crossing in the area, as it forms a main part of the project, which are meant to become completely functional by the time the religious meeting begins, making possible the unhindered flow of train as well as road traffic at that time.

Major construction works done on the section

Several major developments have already been completed, while others are fast-tracked for completion to meet the demands of Maha Kumbh 2025. The most notable projects include the seven ROBs built at a cost of about Rs 375 crore. Three RUBs are nearing completion, and work on other structures is progressing rapidly.

Amit Malviya, Senior Public Relations Officer of the Prayagraj Division mentioned that most of these bridges were upgraded during the Kumbh Mela in 2019. But with this project, the pace has been increased to prepare for the event.

Improved Connectivity for Smooth Movement

Once constructed, the new bridges and underpasses will greatly enhance connectivity in Prayagraj. The newly constructed structures will ensure uninterrupted movement for trains as well as road traffic. As an estimated 10,000 trains are expected to run through the Prayagraj division during the event, these upgrades are necessary for managing the flow of pilgrims and ensuring that the city can handle such a large crowd effectively.

Long-Term Benefits of Infrastructure Upgrades

Though the infrastructure upgrades are made to handle the crowds during the Maha Kumbh, their benefits will go way beyond the event itself.

Reduced Traffic Congestion

The removal of level crossings will make traffic flow easier for city residents after the event is over. This will help in an efficient transportation network, reducing bottlenecks and delays that were common in the area.

Enhanced Train Safety

The construction of RUBs and ROBs ensures safer and seamless train operations. Removing the occurrence of road-rail conflict will significantly reduce accidents due to level crossings, leading to overall safety for passengers as well as commuters.

Economic Development and Regional Expansion

The Maha Kumbh is a big religious event but also one of regional economic growth drivers. During its time, thousands of devotees and tourists rush the region, creating local economic growth in small businesses, hotels, and services. The upgraded infrastructure will therefore serve as a significant booster in furthering this economic growth through welcoming more visitors and helping them to operate smoothly with the existing local industries.

These infrastructure developments, under cooperation between Indian Railways and the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation, are part of a larger vision for urban development in Prayagraj. The city is transforming into a hub of progress in spirituality, economy, and infrastructure, which benefits the region’s residents and visitors.

A Vision for the Future

The Maha Kumbh Mela is not only a source of inspiration for spiritual introspection but also for the much-needed regional transformation. With level crossings removed and RUBs and ROBs added, Prayagraj is soon to be a model in modern infrastructure development, reaping its benefits for its residents and visitors.

In conclusion, Indian Railways is upgrading its infrastructure for the Maha Kumbh 2025 to ensure smooth and efficient transportation for millions of pilgrims. These projects will create long-term impacts on Prayagraj’s infrastructure in reducing traffic congestion, improving rail safety, and driving economic growth long after the event ends.
