The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) resumed several important development projects soon after the stringent anti-pollution measures under Graded Response Action Plan have eased. These initiatives are meant to improve infrastructure and lessen traffic congestion in some vital areas of the city. Some of the major developments currently under way include multi-level parking in Greater Kailash I and Punjabi Bagh, restoration of heritage Kamla Market, and redevelopment of Ambedkar Stadium.
The article covered updates and progress about stalled projects since the restrictions of GRAP have been lifted.
Resumption of Multi-Level Parking Projects
The MCD’s multi-level parking projects in Greater Kailash I and Punjabi Bagh, which were facing delays in implementation due to GRAP’s stricter construction restrictions, are now back on track. The project in Greater Kailash I is expected to open in 2025 after missing several earlier deadlines. Delays were mainly due to tree-cutting permissions and restrictions on construction activities under GRAP’s Stage III and IV restrictions.
The Greater Kailash I project is 75% complete and estimated at Rs 63.7 crore. It will have 399 parking spaces when completed.
The Punjabi Bagh parking facility, near complete at almost 95 percent, can accommodate 225 vehicles. There is hardly much left before the parking complex stands ready.
The resumption of work on these structures will be a giant leap forward in reducing parking shortages in such busy areas as it is projected to reduce traffic congestion once completed.
Restoration Project of Kamla Market
The restoration project of Kamla Market near New Delhi Railway Station is another that has gone forward. This restoration project was earlier put on hold because of GRAP restrictions but is now back on track with a revised deadline. MCD will complete the restoration work by the end of March next year, including the restoration of the 73-year-old clock tower.
Key updates for the restoration of Kamla Market include:
Full restoration and repainting of clock tower and market entrance.
Repair work on the frontage of market shops and external frontages of shops.
Construction of new toilet blocks, including one for women with the demolition of old facilities.
With these improvements, Kamla Market will not only look revitalized but will also offer a better shopping experience for visitors.
Ambedkar Stadium Revamp Work
Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi is one of the prime sports grounds. The MCD has done 70 per cent of the work for redeveloping the ground, changing rooms, cafeteria, and toilet blocks. The estimated amount for the Rs 5.6 crore project is modernising the stadium with better amenities for athletes and visitors.
Major redevelopment aspects include:
Completion of change areas, canteen block, and toilet blocks
Renovation of stand facades and modernization.
The stadium would, therefore be complemented by addition of a new media centre to house future events and activities.
With all this, Ambedkar Stadium becomes a standard venue in this regard that would provide better sports experience to athletes and sports enthusiast in Delhi.
Ongoing Projects and Future Plans
In addition to the above major projects, the MCD is also moving ahead with the second phase of biomining legacy waste at the Okhla landfill. The idea behind this initiative is to reduce the burden of waste in the city and make it a cleaner place for the people.
The MCD officers also mentioned that these initiatives form part of a larger city reinvigoration scheme in terms of its infrastructure for improvement in general functionality. Following the relaxation of restrictions, projects must be completed within due dates and essential public service provisions made available to the people within time.
Conclusion
Relieving GRAP restrictions has permitted the MCD to continue such delayed infrastructure projects, helping citizens and visitors alike to Delhi. The multi-level parking facilities at Greater Kailash I and Punjabi Bagh will provide much-needed parking space, while the restoration of Kamla Market and the redevelopment of Ambedkar Stadium will enhance the city’s commercial and sporting infrastructure. These projects are going to change the face of key areas of the city, and successful completion will contribute to Delhi’s growth and modernization.
As construction activities resume, MCD is committed to delivering these projects on time so as to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Delhi and enhance the overall infrastructure in the city.
